Interclub Match vs NATO

Sunday 21 June at Rigenee

This was IGC's first interclub match of the year played between two old adversaries and good friends. I can give no better tribute than to quote the mail send by the NATO President Roger Fielding after the match

"As most of you will know, the matches against the IGC are always played in a very good spirit and today was no exception. And to add to the spice of things, I should add that we have a few members in the NGC who are also members of the IGC - now that's proper European integration for you.

I ought to say that it was a bit of a strange feeling - standing on the first tee at Rigenee, where Saint Sybil has her Quaich - and not having to take a wee dram of Auchentoschen whisky before hitting the first ball. That was partly because this wasn't the Quaich, but more importantly because the Saint herself was not actually on the course at that time !! I not sure if the reason was just a bad alarm clock [huh], or because she had just returned from Marrakesh via Berlin and a couple of hot spots in the centre of Brussels. Sybil did say that she was held up by Napoleon, on his way to the battle of Waterloo. The old Napoleon story? C'mon Sybil; we've all heard that one before.

The course itself was in superb condition although the greens were a bit too fast [or I was a bit too slow?]. Playing in the on-off-on again rain showers was rather like being in a Christmas pantomime, or back at a military academy, where one changes one's clothes almost every five minutes.

The result? Well, we lost to the better team on the day 16.5 -10.5. All the matches were pretty tight and really could have gone either way if a few putts had been sunk. But that said, all credit to some excellent play from the IGC, for whom Anne Morley had three birdies in a row and Celia Berry 9 pars and a birdie in a terrific round.

Let me just say 'thank you' to Lester Dudfield and Iain Gidman from the IGC for organising a wonderful day and for providing the prizes for the winning pairs.

And if a picture paints a thousand words, then let me also thank Sybil for her 12,000 word essay [Ed the photos] in the form of the attachments.

And finally, finally, remember, when you are in the address and at the high point of your back swing, just stop and look back. There are only two things you should be checking. How many hands are on the club and which one has the glove."
